I really really want to know more about Mycroft’s character.

Lately, for whatever reason, my mind is continuing to return to the scene where he’s sitting alone in a large arm chair on Christmas, a glass of (scotch, perhaps?) in hand, by the fire. He’s all alone, the room is silent.

And that scene goes back and forth between the little Christmas party at 221 B Baker Street, where Sherlock is with John, John’s girlfriend, Mrs. Hudson, Molly, and Lestrade. (The most important people to him, which Moriarty was able to figure out. The more I look back on the Christmas party scene, the happier I am. Super happy that Lestrade is there. I think I’m really really liking the entire lot of characters for this show, truly.)

It’s just a sad scene, for Mycroft, really. He just looks so…lonely. It hurts to think about. And yet, it makes me all the more curious about him. He’s the entire British government, and yet has no companions? Every time he smiles…It’s strained, there’s a pain in his face. He’s consistently smiling, but he’s never *actually* smiling as the expression doesn’t reach his eyes. He looks as if he’s in this constant state of emotional ache. To think that Sherlock didn’t invite Mycroft to the party is sad…but I want to know why.

What drove the wedge between them? Sherlock seems truly angry at Mycroft, but Mycroft consistently worries about his safety. He’s very protective over Sherlock. I have to wonder if he was in on Sherlock faking his death? I’m inclined to think he wasn’t as he got a text like right after that scene and was placing his head in his hands.

I’ve also noticed that whenever Mycroft mentions Sherlock’s and his mother, Sherlock gets very defensive. What all happened there? I really want to know. And while their mother has been mentioned, twice, though briefly, I’ve never heard mention of their father.

When I watched this scene, I thought Mycroft drank alone in his own house, his library or something... I think he owns a country mansion where his and Sherlock's mother lives too. I think their father is dead for many years, I would say he worked for the government as well as Mycroft... I won't be surprised if mother or father, or both have a title. I've heard an opinion that Sherlock's mother is French... I think Sherlock's relationship with his brother and mother got worse when Sherlock was on drugs. I think drugs made them distant and cold to each other, and now they are trying to reconnect but it's not easy and quick route... That's all are of course my guesses.

Oooh. Interesting guesses! So then, you think that Sherlock's mother lives in that country mansion, with Mycroft?

Various Tumblr posts have also given me the impression that Sherlock's father is dead.

It certainly would make sense for the Holmes parents to have had some sort of government titles.

I do think Sherlock and Mycroft's relationship worsened with drugs, and may have caused Mycroft to become more protective over Sherlock. Also more cold and distant. Sherlock doesn't seem to want to reconnect, and Mycroft might...but perhaps he understand that Sherlock might just continue to be stubborn and distant?

Yes, I think Mycroft is a single man who lives in a country mansion with his mother and dozen of servants.

I think Sherlock is somehow angry at Mycroft because he knew Sherlock when he was at his worst, weak and suffering from drug abuse. Mycroft is a witness of this period of Sherlock's past, and this are embarrassing and painful memories for both of them.

Oh. That is a very good point. Mycroft would have known Sherlock at his weakest, at his worst. That's got to be rather unnerving for Sherlock, especially with what a powerful figure Mycroft is.

Do you have any thoughts about John's family background? I think his parents are alive and retired, his father might have been in military. John's sister Harry is gay & alcoholic. I suspect John's parent are partly to blame for her drinking habit... I suspect they are hardly the type who approves of a lesbian daughter...
